Specializing in hand painted Delftware imported from the Netherlands
|
| |
|
Delftware was first made in the 17th century in the Netherlands. The Dutch pottery was influenced in form and color by the Italian earthenware and Oriental porcelain imported to Holland during that period. Delft takes it's name from the lovely town of Delft, where in the 1600's there were many potteries and talented craftsmen.
The quality of the Delft varies greatly. The value of each piece is detemined by the amount of handpainting and the intricacy of the design. The best handpainted Delft will have the potter's insignia and the artist's initials on the bottom and/or a certificate of authenticity.
De Pelikaan's complete Dutch selection offers a touch and taste of Holland in an atmosphere as interesting and pleasant as a stroll through an old Dutch market. On two floors of shopping adventures we carry a wide range of Delft items, from small souvenirs to the finest quality Delftware available. De Pelikaan offers a large selection of Delft tiles, wooden shoes, curtain lace, doiles and tablecloths. Our Christmas corner is open year round. We also carry a large selection of imported foods, including coffee, soup, cookies, licorice, chocolates and other Dutch delicacies.
